We went to the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree again this year in Faneuil Hall. It was great fun with a great band playing music. What a great start to the Christmas Season!

Halloween

At school we the tradition of dressing up for Halloween has continued. Thanks to one Math teacher, there is now a competition between departments. This year our department was a biker gang. I was very impressed how it all came together. (I am on the far left).

Todd also carved a pumpkin this year. Pretty impressive.

NYC Trip

In October we went to NYC for a 24 hour trip with a group of our friends from Boston. We got $1 bus tickets from Megabus. The bus left Boston Friday night at 11:00 pm. We got into NYC at 3:30am and went to a 24hour diner for our first breakfast. Then we went to enjoy Times Square. You would think the picture above is taken at night, but it is actually about 6:00am!

Then we went to Battery Park to enjoy the sunrise, it was beautiful reflecting off the buildings downtown. We walked around for awhile, sat on the bull, had a second breakfast and then went back to Times Square and Central Park. We saw the Fantastiks in the afternoon and left on a bus back to Boston at 11:00pm. It was a great weekend, but very tiring!

Washington DC

Back in September we went to Washington DC with Mitch and Bekah. The only reason we went is because Todd found us a good deal! $73 dollars per person including airfare and a hotel room for three nights. With the deal we each got our own room, so one room became the "hang-out" room and one room was never even touched. We had fun going to the historical sites, finding more deals and enjoying the wonderful weather. Way to go Todd!

1/2 Marathon

A few weekends ago, Todd and I finished a 1/2 marathon with two of our friends Bekah and Laura. We had been training for months and it feels so great to have accomplished this success. The day was perfect for running, sunny and high 60s along a beautiful course on the coast in Portsmouth, NH. I hope to keep up the training and do another 1/2 marathon soon, Todd is transitioning to biking with his new road bike.

Camping on Grape Island

On the last weekend of Summer we camped on a Boston Harbor Island, Grape Island with some friends. It was a great time. We made a big fire on the shore with downtown Boston in the background (you can see it very small in the picture above).

Rockport

We rented a zipcar for the day because I have so much credit and decided to go to Rockport, Ma. It was a very cute town on the ocean. There are a lot of cute little shops and restaurants.

Maine

We recently went to Maine for a weekend with 4 other couples. The cottage (or camp as they call it) was on a beautiful lake in central Maine. We did not have the best weather on Saturday - rain all day - but it was a beautiful day on Sunday. We had a great time jumping off the dock, playing spoons and other fun games until 2 am, kayaking and RELAXING. It was a great time - I can't wait to do it again next year!

Saturday we went up to Mt. Cardigan in New Hampshire with our friends Katelyn and Adam. We hiked the 1.5 miles to the top of the peak and enjoyed a great view. It was the perfect day for a hike.

Grilled Pork Chops with Nectarine Salsa

I have been cooking a lot more lately with my open summer days. Here is one I made tonight that is one of our favorites and very easy! It is adapted from a recipe on allrecipes.com

INGREDIENTS

Salsa:

2-3 nectarines, pitted and diced
1 ripe tomato, seeded and diced
1/4 cup diced onion
1 jalapeno
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes, or to taste
optional - 2 tablespoons fresh chopped cilantro
salt to taste

Pork Chop;

1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon chili powder
salt and ground black pepper to taste
2 tablespoons olive oil
4(4 ounce) boneless pork loin chops

DIRECTIONS

Preheat an outdoor grill for medium-high heat. Lightly oil grate.
To make the salsa, place the nectarines, tomato, onion, cilantro, lime juice, and red pepper flakes in a bowl; toss to blend. Season to taste with salt. Cover, and refrigerate 30 minutes to blend flavors.
Stir the cumin, chili powder, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl. Place the olive oil in a small bowl. Brush the pork chops with oil, and season both sides evenly with the cumin mixture.
Place pork loin chops on the preheated grill. Cook until lightly browned and juices run clear, about 4 minutes on each side - DO NOT overcook!
Place pork chops on serving plates, and top with a generous spoonful of salsa.

The Shoot

Today was the photo shoot for Zipcars. It was supposed to take place from 12-2pm. I reserved my Zipcar unitl 4pm just in case it was running late, traffic or if I had time to do some errands. However, I did not end up getting home until 8pm (after getting groceries). This is what happened:

Show up and wait for about an hour and a half to get hair and make-up done.
Wait another hour and a half for my first shot to begin.
Spend 1 hour in a shot with the CEO of Zipcars and other Zipcar members.
Wait another hour to set up the next shot.
Spend 1 hour in a shot that I don't really understand, but may end up being really cool with editing.

Overall, it was a frustrating first half of the day and a pretty fun second half. The photo shoots were fun to be in. Hey, maybe I will even make it in the magazine. I have no idea when the magazine is coming out, but look for a cover story on zipcars in Fortune magazine. I will keep you updated.

The Zipcar saga continues. I am now part of a photo shoot for Fortune Magazine with Zipcar on Monday. They say the photo shoot could last 2 or more hours - good thing I am not working now. I get more free credit for Zipcar, another free t-shirt and of course, my picture in Fortune. Who would have thought? I will keep up posted on how it goes.

Exciting Plans!!!

The next few months are full of exciting plans. It is a great time to be living in the Boston area! Below is a summary of our upcoming events.

This weekend we are traveling to Nantucket to visit a friend from work.
Aug 21 My parents are coming to visit for a long weekend and we are traveling to Newport, RI
The last weekend in Aug we are going to friend's cottage (they call it a camp here - very strange) on a lake in Maine with 4 other couples.
Labor Day weekend we are camping for a night with friends on one of the Harbor Islands.
Sept 18-21 Todd found us a great deal for a three night stay and flights for $70 a person to Washington DC - going with Bekah and Mitch.
Sept 28 my sister and brother-in-law are coming to visit and we have tickets to a Red Sox game with standing room tickets on the Green Monster
Thanksgiving we are possibly going to the Macys Day Parade in NYC
Going home for Christmas!!
Then no big plans until next July when our good friends are getting married in Ecuador - a wonderful reason to take a vacation!

A Great Boston Weekend!

This past weekend was full of great times with friends in Boston. Friday night was our first Red Sox game at Fenway with our friends Bekah, Mitch, Katelyn and Adam! They played the Oriels and won 3-1. We had standing room only tickets. I thought this would be lots of people and we would not be able to see or move. However, we had plently of room with two high top tables to lean against and a good view from the Third base. Although my feet did get quite sore, it was a much more social event. Our next game is standing room on the Green Monster! This is to fulfill one of my brother-in-laws dreams, hopefully it will live up to the hype.

The next night was the Beach Boys concert on the Charles River at the hatch. The oldies station puts on a few free concerts throughout the Summer. This one was full of good music, including John Stamos (aka Uncle Jessie from Full House) as the drummer. We had a great picnic before the music started with homemade pulled pork and key lime pie (thanks Mitch and Bekah), homemade coleslaw (thanks Dan and Laura) and tons of other great food. Then we danced the night away for almost 2 hours.

Zipcar Low Car Diet

I won!!! I can't remember another time that I won something by just entering. I applied to be a part of the zipcar low car diet and I am one of 30 people who they chose. This means I am supposed to give up my car (which I don't even have) for a month and go car free. I said - no problem, I don't even have a car! So, I just get the benefits. Among other things: 1 year free membership for zipcar, $250 of credit to zipcar, $50 for the T (the subway in Boston for those who don't know), $25 to Whole Foods, 1 ticket to New England Revolution (professional soccer in Boston), case of Vitamin Water, t-shirt, water bottles, and more.

Today there was a press conference for the start of the 30 days. The Mayor was there : )

Whale Watching

We went whale watching today with some friends up North in Gloucester, MA (pronounced GLAH-stur). I honestly was not expecting to see anything, and at the very most to see a spurt of water from their air hole. However, we came upon a group of 4 humpback whales that were breaching (jumping in the air) and slapping their fins on the water. As we got closer they stopped doing this, but we were able to watch them swim and fluke their tails for about 45 minutes. It was amazing! I highly recommend going whale watching (however we did get it for half price, so it was even more worth it).

Todd's brother Tim, has recently had his 5 minutes of fame on many local websites and TV stations.

Boston Friends

We were at a party for one of our friends in Boston last night, and it dawned on me how I am surrounded by incredibly intelligent and inspiring friends (including my amazing husband) who are doing great things. Here is a small sampling of what they do (which I will no doubt be simplifying):

DNA research (very specific and groundbreaking, but honestly I didn't understand much of what he was saying)
Clean Coal Energy - creates energy from coal with NO pollution and does not use water
Many important public health issues - including sexually trafficking of women, where she is traveling to Nicaragua and Costa Rica for 4 weeks to research this topic

Bunker Hill Bike Ride

We went on a bike ride today with some friends to the Bunker Hill monument in Chalestown (just north of the city across the Charles River). Todd and I have not explored this area of town but now that we have more time on our hands, so it was fun to ride along the Charles River, see the beautiful skyline of Boston and enjoy the amazing weather!
When we got to the monument we climbed the 249 twisty stairs to the top to see a great view of Boston.
Then we finished the afternoon off by sharing a smoothie - yum!

San Francisco & Napa in February

Gala

Last night we went to a Gala celebrating our church's 200th anniversary. It was a great night learning about the history of the church and spending time with friends. Just imagine 120 tables of 8-10 people singing the Doxology a capella - it was a great end to the night. God has truly blessed this church for 200 years and we pray He will continue to do so for another 200 years.

Todd found a great deal on raisins, so of course we bought them. After Todd's $10 free gift certificate 72 packages of Disney High School Musical raisins cost $1.08 (including shipping). Todd would also like to point out that the $10 has an opportunity cost, so it really cost $11.08 :-)

Studying

Todd passed the CFA level 1, but now he has to study for the CFA level II. He got a package with study materials, and included were these encouraging postcards to send to family and friends - real encouraging :)

It's Been Too Long

So, it's been way too long since I last posted anything. A lot has happened in that time. This post is a quick summary of an eventful few months in Boston. Todd and I are really growing to enjoy our time in Boston. We have met some great friends and had some really fun times.

First, my parents came to visit in October. We took a trip up the coast to Portland, Maine. We stopped along the way to shop at an outlet mall (of course), visit some lighthouses, and explore some cute towns on the ocean. We also went out to Peaks Island, an island off the coast of Portland. It is a cute little island that is really busy during the summer, but was beautifully quiet during the fall.

Next was Halloween. I am usually not very excited about halloween, but this year the entire Math department at my high school dressed up as the track team from the movie "Juno". Not only did we dress up, but we ran around the school during both lunch periods. We ran through the halls, classrooms, the quad and the cafeteria. The students in the cafeteria cheered for us! It was great. Now we just have to top that for next year (if you have any good ideas let me know!). By the way, the shirts were hand painted by every teacher.

We have also gone to the Christmas tree lighting of the largest tree in New England (which also happens to be about 2 blocks from out place), go kart racing where we had to wear a full suit and helmet, and we went home for Thanksgiving and got stuck in a winter storm and couldn't get back to Boston until Tuesday. Todd also studied like crazy for the CFA exam and then took it last weekend.

Apples!!

This weekend Todd and I went to an apple orchard with our friends from church. The orchard was up in Ipswich, MA. It was a beautiful area and a gorgeous Fall day (70 and Sunny - not a cloud in the sky). We took a hayride out to the orchard and picked our own apples (this was actually my first time doing this!). Then we got the necessary fresh doughnuts and cider, yummy!

Today I was lucky enough to have the day off. I spent half of the day making my first apple crisp and my mom's famous applesauce. Since I am no longer within driving distance to get her applesauce, I decided I needed to make it myself (it doesn't feel like fall without homemade applesauce). After calling her about 3 times, I think it came out very well - I am very proud of myself.

Todd also wanted me to post a picture of his homemade guacamole that he made today :)

Waterfire!!

Saturday night Todd and I went to Providence, RI with 3 other couples from the church we have been going to (Park Street Church). The night was quite an adventure....

First, two of the couples had to run for about 10 min. to catch the train we took to Providence.

Once in Providence, someone needed to find a Walgreens - this started a walk through the shady part of Providence that took about an hour. The picture is the parking lot we were trying to cut through - no such luck, barbed wire!

Then we stopped at a shop for gelato. While waiting, another customer began to have some kind of medical emergency (I think a stroke, but I am definitely not an expert). Needless to say he was taken away by an ambulance.

Then, the whole reason we went to Providence - Waterfire! Every Saturday during the summer they fill these "sculptures" that are in the water with mini bonfires - hence the name "Waterfire". There are about 100 of these bonfires lit down the river. They play music, have street vendors, and much more. You can also pay a lot of money and take a gondola ride through the bonfires - it looked like fun, but way out of our price range.

Next we walked along the river and found some salsa dancing, elephant ears and other goodies. On our walk we encountered the most interesting part of the night - a man wearing very little clothing atop a metal stand swinging rope with fire at the end. The swinging fire let off sparks everywhere. It was very cool, but so random. I really wish I had a picture.

All in all, the night was a very fun adventure. We all went to Providence not knowing what to expect and ended up having a really great time experiencing something from the East coast and becoming better friends.

Our New Home

We have moved in and are pretty much unpacked in our new home. We are living right downtown Boston in a high rise next to the Old State House and Faneuil Hall (if you are familiar with Boston). It is not a very big place, but we are enjoying the location. We were able to get rid of our car - which is quite liberating, not having to worry about parking, gas, insurance, etc. Todd walks to work and I take the train. The only issue so far is groceries - the closest one is .4 mi away and that is a Whole Foods, so if we want decently priced food, there is an issue. We actually rode our bikes to the a grocery store and rode back through downtown Boston with bags of groceries on our handle bars (I wish I had a picture of that for you :).

New Baby in the Buys Family

We are a new aunt and uncle to a beautiful baby boy named Lucas Alan. Todd's brother Travis and sister-in-law Melanie had their first child yesterday. We are so happy for you guys and wish that we could be there to celebrate with you. We can't wait to see him at Thanksgiving!

I Want to Move!!

Even though Todd and I have moved to Boston and he has started work, we are not moving into our apartment until Saturday. So, for two weeks, this is what we are living in. My relatives were nice enough to let us store our stuff and stay at their house for while they are out of town, but I am sick of living out of a suitcase and maneuvering around all our furniture and boxes. Saturday cannot come fast enough!

Brazil Pictures

For those of you who don't know, our trip to Brazil consisted of 2 days in Rio, 1 day in Manaus (city outside of the Amazon), 3 days in the Amazon, 5 days in Salvador, 2 days in Iguassu Falls (larger than Niagara) and then 2 more days in Rio. It was a much needed vacation and reward after Todd and I finished up our Masters. The highlights of the trip for me were the Christ statue that I have been wanting to see for years, the monkey jungle in the Amazon where about 30 wild monkeys are rehabilitated, the Iguassu falls which were beautiful and powerful, and hang gliding.

Yes, that's right, Todd and I went hang gliding. It was Todd's idea, and I was quite scared standing at the top of a mountain looking at the wooden platform that I would have to run off of into thin air. Luckily I had a great pilot, whom I questioned about his credentials as we were about to run off the cliff - he has been flying for over 26 years and has over 18,000 flights, so needless to say I felt pretty safe. All he kept saying was "Just keep running!" He made it very clear that if I did not freely run off the cliff, there would be problems, he couldn't drag me. So, I RAN.

It was AMAZING!! There is no crazy drop where you lose your stomach (which I hate) and you have the amazing feeling of flying. The views were out of this world. We flew over the famous Tijuca Forest in Rio, the ocean and landed right on the beach.

Well, I never thought that I would become a blogger, but when you move to a new city miles away, you want to keep connected - thus the title of the blog ;) I hope that this blog with help you keep connected with me and vice versa.

Todd and I just got back from an amazing 16 day vacation in Brazil! I will be posting a lot of pictures and video slowly, so check back often. We have also just settled in our new city of Boston. Todd started his new job Monday and I am preparing my teaching materials for the start of the school year in September - more to come on both those topics I am sure.
